Throw the best Halloween party for grown ups by using these creative ideas for cheap decorations, spooky food, party invitations and fun games.

Halloween can be a time for adults to relax and let the kid inside them dress up and have fun. Atmospheric music, simple decor and cheap but tasty party food is all that's required for a devilish night of fun.

Halloween Party Ideas

An inventive theme is usually the key to setting an adult Halloween party apart from one for the kids. Here are some tips that should provide inspiration for a memorable party:

  • Lady Gaga – Much inspiration can be gained for outfits from Lady Gaga and you can either make your own costumes or buy online. Her music can be mixed in with more frightful Halloween tunes.
  • Zombie – This can be an incredibly creative theme with a throwback to eighties horror movies.
  • True Blood – This popular series would make an excellent theme for those who are fans and music can be chosen directly from the show.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer – This show had a cult following and the variety of characters offers many ideas for costumes.
  • "Resurrected" – rather than have an obvious theme guests can bring dead characters back to life. This can work well with dusty Einstein or a dug up Cleopatra as ideas for unique outfits.
  • Seven Deadly Sins – Take inspiration from the deadly sins and the home can be decorated to resemble hell.

Pick a party theme first and then decorate accordingly and send out appropriate invitations.

Cheap Party Decorations

Keep the cost of decorating down by collecting the items you need in advance. Free or cheap Gothic-style furniture and accessories can be found at thrift stores, garage sales and online at Craigstlist or Ebay. Craigslist has a free section where people advertise all kinds of things they are giving away. The easiest way to throw a cheap party is to use what you have. Use silverware rather than spending money of disposable plates. You may be able to borrow things from friends such as decorations, chocolate fountain and (if you're lucky) smoke machine.

Halloween Party Invitations

The invitations should complement the chosen theme of the party. For example if you are having a Lady Gaga Halloween party then the invitation could be cut to her silhouette. Alternatively a cheap party favor set of kids sunglasses could be purchased and used as unique invitations. Just have a small tag attached with the party details. Invitations need not be physical – use Facebook or email to invite your friends and keep track of the attendees. If you prefer making the invitations then here are some creative Halloween party invitation ideas that can be made at home:

  • Frozen Invitation – If you have a laminator at home then design invitations on the computer and then laminate them. Freeze them individually in water in a suitable plastic tubs. These will have to be hand-delivered and guests will have to dramatically break the ice before to get their invitation.
  • Cookie Invitation – Write the party details on the cupcake with icing and for an eco-friendly and tasty option.
  • Fashionable Invitation – Get a pack of cheap plastic bangles or glowsticks and write the party details on them with permanent marker. Guests can wear them to the party to get in!

Halloween Party Food

Quick and easy Halloween food can be made at home without spending much money. Try the following ideas:

  • Skeleton Pizza – Cut pizza bases into skull shapes and use sweet corn and black olives to decorate the pizza into a spooky face.
  • Monster Salad – A simple spread of salad vegetables can be arranged in a monster shape.
  • Tombstone Pudding - Make a standard chocolate pudding in small cups. Insert a plain biscuit with "R.I.P" written in black icing.
  • Sweet Severed Fingers – Mould fingers out of marzipan, put strawberry jam on the severed part and use an almond for the nail. Use as sweet snacks or to decorate a plain cake.
  • Ice Hand – A real winner could be an eye-catching red fruit punch in a bowl with an ice hand floating in it. Fill a plastic glove with apple juice and and freeze it. Remove plastic glove and you have a spooky ice hand.

Halloween Party Games for Adults

A Halloween party must have some fun games and activities to get into the spirit of the occasion. Let everyone indulge their inner child with these ideas:

  • Apple Bobbing – Put a twist on this classic party game by adding small pumpkins, ice cubes, frozen grapes and plastic Halloween paraphernalia.
  • Pumpkin Bowling – Collect twelve large drinks bottles and fill with sand. Paint white and draw ghosts, bats etc on them with permanent marker. Use a small pumpkin as a bowl.
  • Ouija Boards – If you're very brave get everyone together to play on an Ouija board, be sure to make sure everyone is aware of how it works in advance.
  • Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin – Use a real pumpkin instead of a donkey with eyes in place.
  • Scavenger Hunt – Get everyone hunting for clues to solve a murder/win a game.
  • Spooky Karaoke – Borrow a Karaoke machine and get some spooky tunes to sing along to, this can even become a contest.

A Halloween party for adults can be incredibly fun with a creative theme, party food and games. Save money by reducing waste, borrowing items if possible and using what is already in the home.
