Caring for dry skin means providing plenty of moisture. Find out how to naturally take care of skin with homemade treatments and diet tips.

Dry skin is often aggravated in the winter and needs plenty of moisture as well as protection from air conditioning, indoor heating and the elements. Nature offers some of the best home skin remedies for dry skin and they not only are effective, easy to create and save money, but they also avoid harsh soaps and cleansers that can exacerbate dry skin. It is best to use wash with warm water for cleaning as hot water strips oils from skin. Spending too much time in hot tubs can also dry skin out leading to itchy, flaky skin.

Diet Tips for Healthy Skin

Reasons for skin losing moisture include heredity factors, naturally low oil/ sweat production and environmental reasons. The following tips can help skin look better:

  • Drink more water. It is advised to drink at least two litres of pure water a day to keep skin healthy.
  • Increase oil intake. Not eating enough essential fatty acids can lead to dry skin, this can be resolved by eating more foods such as extra virgin oil, flaxseeds, avocados and walnuts.
  • Consuming spices such as turmeric, cumin, and coriander help to soothe and relieve dry skin.
  • Marshmallow, dandelion, calendula, and chamomile herbal teas are good to treat dry skin conditions.

Dry Skin Remedies: Cleansing Oil

A gentle oil is best to remove makeup and clean the skin. Here is a recipe for a nutrient-rich cleansing oil:

  • 75ml jojoba oil
  • 75ml almond oil
  • 10 drops carrot-seed essential oil

Mix the oils together in a glass bottle and shake well before use. To use apply with a cotton pad to gently remove dirt and makeup. Follow with a facial cleanser.

Aromatherapy Cleanser for Mature, Dry Skin

This rejuvenating cleanser helps to nourish dry skin with palarosa and rose oils, and aloe vera gel heals and soothes the skin:

  • 70ml rose water
  • 60ml vegetable glycerin
  • 60ml aloe vera gel
  • 5 drops palmarosa essential oil
  • 2 drops rose essential oil

Mix the ingredients in a glass bottle and always shake before use. Dampen skin with warm water and massage about 20ml of the cleanser into skin. Rinse carefully with tepid water.

Herbal Dry Skin Treatmen

Dry skin benefits from a gentle scrub that smoothes away dead skin cells. Almonds and oats nourish dry skin; use scrub weekly to keep flaky skin at bay:

  • 150g rolled oats
  • 100g ground almonds
  • 2 tablespoons dried and ground rose petals
  • 1 tablespoon dried and ground lavender
  • 1 drop rose essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon almond oil

Mix all ingredients and store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Gently massage mixture into skin and rinse well with warm water. Other useful ingredients for any homemade skincare for dry skin include coconut oil, avocado oil, banana and honey.
