In Vedic or Jyotish astrology, the pearl is used to enhance the effects of the moon, though some astrologers say that the pearl is not suitable for everyone.
Moon changes are said to have an impact on most individuals, and some believe that wearing a pearl may bring harmony during these phases.
The Moon and Pearl Gemstone in Jyotish Astrology
The moon is believed to have a saumya (gentle) nature, and is also intuitive, imaginative and represents the manahsthiti (mind) of the Kalpurusha. When the moon is well placed, the individual will be well-balanced. The moon also influences the seasonal and monthly cycles in the body. In terms of its physical impact, it's said that the pearl is related to the heart, blood and mind.
The pearl is believed to bring confidence, peace of mind, happiness and soothe depression as it balances the moon influencing emotions, mind and prosperity. It's said that problems or ailments attributed to an inauspicious moon can be remedied by this gem, though this should be prescribed by a professional Jyotish astrologer. Other remedies include donating rice on Mondays, worshiping Lord Shiva, respecting the mother and chanting the Chandra Gayatri mantra.
The most auspicious time to wear the pearl gemstone is on a Monday in Pushya Nakshatra. Alternatively Rohini, Hastha and Shravana are also constellations auspicious for wearing the gemstones as well as any Shukla Paksha. The pearl should be set in silver and ideally worn as a ring on the little finger. The mantra for the moon is “om som somaay namah” and some recommend reciting this chant before wearing the ring. Blue sapphire, diamond and gomedh are incompatible with the pearl and therefore they should not be worn together.
Pearl Gemstone and the Twelve Rashis
It is important to ensure that a pearl is suitable for the wearer and one easy method of checking is by checking the rashi compatibility. Here is an analysis of the relationship of each of the twelve moon signs and the pearl gemstone:
- Mesh rashi (Aries) – Pearl is beneficial as the moon rules over the fourth house and can bring fortune related to this area. Many astrologers advise that a natural pearl can be worn by individuals with the moon in ascendant 2nd, 4th, 5th and 9th houses.
- Vrishabh rashi (Taurus) – Vrishabh should avoid wearing pearls unless the moon is in the ascendant itself and the wearer is in the major period of the moon.
- Mithun rashi (Gemini) – Pearl should be worn if the moon is placed in the 2nd house in its own sign or 10th house in Pisces (only in the major period of the moon, preferably after a trial).
- Kark rashi (Cancer) – As the sign's ruling planet the moon is auspicious yet the astrological chart should be checked before wearing. Pearl can be worn when the moon is in the 7th house, 9th house, 10th house, 11th house. Those who have the moon placed in the 5th house in Scorpio must avoid not wear pearls.
- Simha rashi (Leo) – Pearl can be worn by this rashi if the moon is in exaltation in the 10th house.
- Kanya rashi (Virgo) – Pearl can be worn in the moon’s major ruling period if placed in the 9th house of fate or 11th house of profits. This can bring much profit to the wearer.
- Tula rashi (Libra) – If the moon is in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th or 11th house then pearl can be worn in the moon’s major ruling period.
- Vrishika rashi (Scorpio) – The moon is recommended for this rashi and those with the moon in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 10th house should wear pearl during their whole life as it will bring success in all areas.
- Dhan rashi (Sagittarius) – As the moon rules the 8th house of losses and accidents - pearl gemstone should be avoided by this rashi. The position of Jupiter, Mars and Sun must be analysed before considering this gem. If the individual's moon occupies the 9th house of fate then pearl can be worn in the moon’s major ruling period.
- Makar rashi (Capricorn) – Pearl can be worn if the moon is in the 5th house and only during the moon’s major ruling period.
- Kumbh rashi (Aquarius) – Pearl is not recommended unless the moon’s ruling period has begun and the moon is placed in the 4th house in exaltation.
- Meen rashi (Pisces ) – The moon is auspicious planet for Meen rashi. If the moon is placed in the wearer’s ascendant, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or the 10th house, then it's said that the Pearl gemstone should be worn.
Jyotish astrologers often prescribe the use of the pearl during the moon’s major ruling period and involves considering many factors and it is important to look at an individual’s chart prior to wearing the gem. Read How to Wear Jyotish Gemstones for more information.
