Astrology claims that certain personality traits are more prominent in those born in one sign than in another. It is fun to discover the potential compatibility of the typical zodiac signs though many don't always fit the characteristics of their astrological sign.
The Elements in Astrology
Understanding the elements in astrology acts as a guide to the compatibility between different zodiac signs. There are four elements and three zodiac signs in each element:
- Fire – Aries, Leo and Sagittarius;
- Earth – Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn;
- Air – Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; and
- Water – Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
Fire represents adventure, ambition, courage, optimism, passion and a vibrant outlook. Earth stands for endurance, practicality, seriousness, a need for security, stubbornness, stability, a sense of responsibility and a realistic approach. Air symbolises changeability, communication, flirtatiousness, freedom, kindness, logic, open-mindedness, restlessness and versatility. Water signifies compassion, creativity, emotional depth, family orientation, intuition, sensuality, spirituality, sensitivity and understanding.
Generally the ideal partnership is of signs of the same element, for example Aries/ Leo (fire with fire). Also a complementary sign is the second best choice as explained below:
- Fire with Air – Fire’s energy burns brightly and spreads with air’s inspiration. Also a fire sign’s sense of adventure combined with an air sign’s dynamism and fun spirit can result in memorable times.
- Earth and Water – Water signs are grounded and given security by earth, and earth signs are encouraged and nourished by the sensitivity and understanding of water signs.

- Taurus – Virgo, Capricorn, Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio.
- Gemini – Libra, Aquarius, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.
- Cancer: Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.
- Leo – Sagittarius, Aries, Libra, Gemini, and Aquarius.
- Virgo – Taurus Capricorn, Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.
- Libra – Aquarius, Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius, and Aries.

A couple born under a same sun sign are not always compatible. For example the typical Virgo can be critical and it may be difficult for two Virgos to live with each other. Scorpio/Scorpio pairings can also be difficult, though an Aquarius same sign relationship can work very well. Often a little contrast in personalities is beneficial for long-term relationships so same sign unions are not always advisable.
An analysis of astrological charts particularly the individuals moon sign and ascendant sign is important to accurately gauge compatibility. Relationships are complex and emotions and feelings playing an important role, astrology just acts as a guide to understand a person’s personality traits and their outlook on life.
